Wenceslas Squarealt

Wenceslas square is Prague business and cultural center. It is not a square in real sense, but rather 682 meters long and 60 meters wide boulevard leading from Můstek to National Museum. Wenceslas square have witnessed many significant historical events and it is traditional place for demonstrations, celebrations, happenings and other public gatherings.

Monument of St. Wenceslasalt

The monument of St. Wenceslas on Wenceslas square is probably the most famous sculptural monument of the city of Prague. Its author is the most significant Czech sculptor of the late 19th and early 20th century Josef Václav Myslbek, who worked on the sculptural group over 30 years. The monument is not only a symbol of Czech state, but also a kind of an erected imperative finger pointing to the necessity of preserving basic national, cultural and spiritual values.

Old Town Square & Prague Astronomical Clockalt

Old Town square is a center of Old Town and historical part of the Prague as well. The square extends over 9 thousand square meters and is part of the Royal Route. Old Town astronomical clock also know as Prague Astronomical Clock or Orloj is a medieval clock located on the southern part of the tower belonging to Old Town Hall. The center of the clock is being dominated by astrological clock face, under which can be seen calendar table.

State Operaalt

State Opera Prague is a theatre with Opera and Ballet Company, which belongs to the most significant music scenes of Europe. Since its opening in year 1888, when it was opened as a New German Theatre, countless prominent artists have performed there. In year 1993, when it became again an independent theatrical scene, after it’s more than half century lasting relation with National Theatre, the theatre was renamed to State Opera Prague. Nonetheless, the newly regain independence have ended by 1st January 2012, when State Opera begun to merge with National Theatre again.

National Museumalt

National Museum is the most significant Czech museum institution. This term is also used as a name for its main building, currently closed from July 2011 due to undergoing reconstruction, which will take four years. The New Renaissance style building, designed by Josef Schulz and built between years 1885 – 1890, is creating a dominant feature of the whole Wenceslas square.

Jewish Town Josefovalt

Until year 1850 when it joined city of Prague, Josefov was called Jewish Town. Jewish Town – Josefov was named after Joseph II, son of the Marie –Theresa, who in its framework of enlightened ruling did not persecute Jews as severely. The original Jewish Town was by the end of 19th century, as a poor ghetto, destined to complete redevelopment.

Charles Bridgealt

Charles Bridge is oldest existing bridge over Vltava in Prague and second oldest preserved bridge in Czech Republic. Building of the bridge started in year 1357 under patronage of Carl IV and was finished in year 1402. Prague became, also with the help of stone bridge, important place on the European trading routes. The bridge was also gradually ornamented by 31 sculptures and sculptural groups.

The National Theatrealt

National Theatre in Prague belong among the most famous theatres in Czech Republic. The New Renaissance style building is the most significant building in the country, not only from architectural, but also cultural and historical perspective. The cornerstone of the National Theatre was laid in year 1868. Theatre was firstly opened in year 1881, unfortunately during finishing works building caught a fire which destroyed majority of the theatre. In order to rebuild the theatre was organized national fund rising, thanks to which the theatre was reopened in year 1883.

Bethlehem Chapelalt

Bethlehem Chapel is a chapel in Prague Old Town. Original chapel, established in year 1391, was built between years 1391 – 1394 for preaching in Czech language. Master Jan Hus as well as other Hussites priests preached there. Throughout the history the chapel has several times changed its purpose, until year 1786 when it was taken down. In year 1919 was decided to rebuilt the chapel as a monument to a Hussite movement. Renewed chapel currently serves as a ceremonial aula for several Czech universities.

Municipal Housealt

Municipal house is one of the most famous Art Nouveau building with New Renaissance elements, located on Republic square, in close vicinity of Powder Tower. The building serves mostly for representative purposes. Municipal House has played several times important role in Czech history: On 28th October 1918 was there declared independence of Czechoslovakia, in year 1989 Vaclav Havel and representatives from Obcanske Forum meet there with communist government.

Powder gatealt

Powder Tower is a late gothic building located on boundaries of Na Příkopech street and Republic square, next to the Municipal House, and it is considered as one of the symbols of Prague. Under the tower begin Celetná street, which form a first part of the Royal Route. Powder Tower is currently 65 meters tall, its view gallery is in 44 meter height, towards which lead 186 steps. The tower is open to the public and it is owned by city of Prague.

Dancing House also known as Ginger and Fred, finished in year 1996, is located on the right bank of Vltava on the corner of Rašín’s waterfront and Jiráskovo square. It is a first building designed by world’s leading architects and built in Czech capital city after the Velvet Revolution. The building was named after the shape of its towers, inspired by famous dancing duo Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
